Ghosts. Spirits. Who is going "I don't believe in those" or "LaLaLaLaLaLa, scares me, don't want to know!"
The spirits around us generally leave us be. They have better things to do than rattle chains, tip over chairs, and make spooky noises that have the hair on the back of our necks standing up straight.
However....sometimes they have been part of a family for a long time, and want to let their loved ones know they're okay.
A friend of mine, Leslie, and her husband lost one of their dogs not too long ago. Zena had been with them for years. She was Scott's dog, mostly.
She got sick, very sick. Their other dog, Maisie, considerably younger, took to creeping around the house. She didn't want to disturb her ill and aged sister too much.

As Zena's time to pass came closer, the family drew in. They loved Zena, told her what a good dog she was, how important she was to the family. It wasn't anything she hadn't heard before, but it was especially poignant because her time was running out.
Zena passed away. The entire family was bereft, especially Scott, who missed having her by his side. They would play tennis ball catch, and Zena's way of letting Scott know she wanted to play was to touch his foot. Now that no longer would happen.

Zena touches Scott's foot. Let's play!

Zena had always had a bed next to Scott's chair in the living room. After she passed, they moved it. It was too hard to look at.
One evening, Scott and Leslie were watching TV in the living room and Scott suddenly jumped. He gazed at Leslie, emotion coming from every pore. He looked at his feet, and then at the empty space where Zena's bed used to be.
"What's the matter?" asked Leslie.
Scott could barely contain himself. He started crying. "Zena just walked over my feet and laid down in her bed. I could feel her! She was just here!"
Zena wanted this lovely family to know that she was okay, and that they had done exactly the perfect thing for her. She was happy and joyful in her next life.
Since Zena has passed, her sister Maisie has become more playful. Maisie could feel all the stress in the house when Zena was sick, and now she wanted everyone to know that life goes on, Zena is happy, and she, Maisie, is there to make everyone smile.
