I'm Worried about Niko

Niko is the oldest dog in our family. He came from Houston (so yes, he barks with a drawl). He was found wandering the streets, and some nice people in Colorado saw his picture and brought him up to Parker to a dog rescue. He put mommee and daddee under his spell, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Just adopted. About a year old.

Niko's been around since before me. When I arrived, 8 weeks old, a little bundle of fur, he was there - big brother. We've always gotten along.

Me and my buddy

Now he's old.

Heck, time doesn't stop for any of us - I'm 11. How did that happen? Just yesterday I was a tyke. Now I'm the oldest cat in the house.

Niko has trouble getting up. Sometimes he doesn't want to ride in the truck, one of his favorite pastimes. He wheezes.

He snores. OMG, he snores.

He goes for walks, but sometimes those walks are really quick, because he's decided he's gone far enough (like 50 feet), and it's time to come back. I watch him sometimes from the window.

I don't want him to be gone, and I've depended on him for stability all 11 of my years. How will I cope? What will I do?

Does this sound familiar? I know mommee and daddee watch him closely to make sure he's all right. Sometimes I hear them talking about how empty the house will seem without him. They're doing all the things to give him a good quality of life, but one day it won't be enough.

Then we'll all have to say goodbye.

For now.
