Sweet George

animals cats life journeys Jan 27, 2026

If we listen closely, our animal friends tell us what they need. But we have to be open to getting our ego out of the way and seeing what wants to happen. Good lesson for all parts of life!

A cat named George lived on the property of a rescue group. He had shelter, and someone who fed him, but was pretty much left to himself. He wasn't unfriendly, he was just there. He was outside for a reason.

NOT George, but as cute as....

Attempts to introduce him to the joys of indoor living were met with scorn by George. Unbeknownst to those taking care of him, he had other plans, and it wasn't being where he was. Whenever he was brought inside he would mark all the horizontal surfaces. This was primarily the middle of the caretaker's bed. So she did what a lot of people do. She decided he could live outside. Okay by George. Part 1 of the plan done and done! (Be a little difficult.)

A few years passed, and he got in a fight. He was hurt pretty badly, and the vet, after cleaning him up, decided he needed a course of antibiotics. Unfortunately (or so it seemed) this meant he had to be indoors, so he could get his twice-a-day antibiotics before he could go back to being an outside cat. The caretaker decided maybe he needed to go somewhere else for his convalescence, and asked a fellow member of the rescue group to take him on. Part 2 done and done! (Heading toward the desired destination!)

George came to live with Mary, and had his own room while he got better. Amazingly, George used the litter box religiously, took his meds without a struggle, and was affectionate and got along with all of Mary's other cats when he was introduced to them. Mary thought he was more than  "just George", and added "Sweet" to his name. In Mary's house, that's who he was. He was about six years old.

Mary is very tuned into the animals in her care, and communicates with them on a deep level. One evening, he came to Mary and asked if he could stay with her. She agreed. Part 3 done and done! (Land where he wanted to be.) He promised to always use the litter box and be sweet.

Mary was showing cats at the time, and entered Sweet George in an upcoming show when he fell ill. He couldn't keep anything down, had diarrhea, and was losing weight. Instead of strutting his stuff at the cat show, he went to the vet. He had only been with Mary for about a year.

It was cancer. Very bad, terminal.

Mary had a fulfilling career as a vet tech. She asked if she could take home the euthanasia meds so that when the time came, she could let him go with little fuss. She was granted permission, and they went home.

Later that weekend, Mary could tell he was nearing the finish line. Sweet George's journey was almost done.

As they sat on the floor together, every one of Mary's cats came to where they were sitting. One by one, each cat placed a paw on Sweet George's shoulder, and then backed away so the next family member could say goodbye.

Mary told Sweet George he could let go and she had the means to help.

True to his promise to be unmessy, Sweet George got up and used the litter box. He then laid back down next to Mary, and she helped him leave his body.

Sweet George ended up where he wanted to be, with a family who would love him for who he was, and didn't try to put his personality in a "box". He and Mary were meant for one another. Listen closely to your animals, and they will tell you what they need. If you think they're trying to say something and you're not hearing, contact me and I can help you.
